Ecological Land Projects & Field Work
Below are examples of ecological consulting, land assessment, regenerative land management, and training & inspection services. Each project focuses on understanding site conditions, identifying opportunities for ecological improvement, and supporting better long-term land function while complying with Ecology regulations and specifications.

These are not aesthetic redesigns—they are systems-based approaches to improving soil, water, vegetation, and habitat conditions over time.
Project Approach
Each site is approached through field observation and ecological analysis, including:
  • Water movement and drainage patterns
  • Soil conditions and compaction
  • Vegetation structure and plant communities
  • Habitat quality and biodiversity
  • Site constraints and disturbance history
  • Opportunities for ecological improvement
Recommendations are developed based on how the system is functioning as a whole, not just isolated issues.​

Project Example

1. Drainage / Stormwater — Water Retention & Landscape Function

Challenge:
A residential property experiencing excess roof runoff, declining plant health, and a landscape with little water retention.

​Approach:
Site assessment focused on water volume, soil conditions, habitat, slope and drainage rate to assess the size of a potential rain garden.  ​​

Result:
Installation of drainage pipe, rain garden biomix soils and drought tolerant native plants provided the perfect balance to improve water retention, soil structure, and vegetation that absorbs more than 20,000 gallons of water runoff yearly. ​

Project Example

2. Protected Land Trust Property / Regenerative Land Management

Challenge:
23 acre Land Trust property faced encroaching new residential development endangering wildlife, land hydrology, and protected habitat. 

Approach:
Evaluated site conditions across multiple zones including hydrology, soil health, vegetation patterns, wildlife habitat and potential encroachment exposure.

Identified opportunities for use of excavated tree branches, stumps and soils that helped to construct a 700 foot long berm. 

Result:
A buffer was constructed with native shrubs and onsite materials to create a vegetated privacy border which continues to support wildlife habitat and continuity of Land Trust protection. ​

Project Example

3. Habitat-Focused Landscape — Biodiversity Enhancement 

Challenge:
Property with small front lawn and ditch lacked appropriate drainage and curb appeal for a landscape business entrance. 

Approach:
Restructured area to include a rain garden style dispersion trench that included native plants and shrubs along with a dry creek bed aesthetic. and ecological connectivity.
Identified gaps in habitat layering and seasonal resource availability.

Result:
A beautiful and resilient landscape drainage system that increases habitat, cleans water runoff from the surrounding roadways, and provides long-term ecological function.

4.  Joint-Base Lewis McChord
  • Training & Maintenance
  • Pervious Pavement Inspection & Testing

Challenge:
Little to no maintenance over 15+ years. No inspections done. No cleaning of pervious surfaces, and only occasional removal of scotch broom from rain gardens. Systems functionality was undetermined.

Approach:
Assessed existing site conditions, and ecological connectivity of surface pollutants to rain gardens, and determined the resulting explosion of invasive species. Researched specifications for Pervious Pavement testing and Department of Ecology guidelines for removal of invasive species and rain garden maintenance.

Result:
​Performed soldier training and maintenance per DOE guidelines and pervious surfaces inspections Per ASTM C-1701.​
What These Projects Have in Common

Across all projects, the focus is consistent:
  • Understand how the land is currently functioning
  • Identify limiting factors in soil, water, and vegetation systems
  • Develop practical strategies to improve ecological performance
  • Support long-term resilience rather than short-term appearance
  • Work with natural processes instead of relying on high-input maintenance

Note on Scope

Some projects are advisory and assessment-based. Others include ongoing support or phased implementation guidance depending on client needs.

Each engagement is tailored to the site and objectives rather than a fixed package.

​Working with Kathy was a joy from start to finish. Our rain garden was part of a larger landscaping project, and Kathy worked beautifully with everyone else involved. I had very little time to devote to the project, and Kathy kept me well informed on a daily basis.
